I am sure one could 'ring-fence' any investment should you wish to.

Ie offer to invest £7m purely to buy back ER (or whatever the figure is, and
even 'own' the ground and allow the club to live there rent free), or offer
to invest £3m purely for transfers etc.

I dunno, but then again I don’t have millions to spend and therefore would
not waste Bates time speaking to him about it.

Would I trust him with my money?  

1. If I were investing in a football club I would consider that a high risk
investment, or a donation.  

2. Why not, he looks after his own well enough!
