well, it was obvious which posting triggered this weekend's unacceptable threads. As soon as it appeared, I gave appropriate guidance off-list, in the hope that damage might be limited. Seemed to have worked until Woodmansey took the ball and ran with it even further into the mire. John B has now got to pick up the pieces, which I am damn sure he could do without.
Any ISP might have immediately suspended the list and there were several postings which could well result in a visit from the Boys in Blue (and I'm not talking about the Cov guys) to the perpetrators. Seriously, that sh1t was pure legal dynamite. Not just offensive. Racist comment will always receive a strong response and the "anonyminity" of the internet won't protect you, ask Mr Langham or Mr Townsend. Everything you do and everything you say online can be traced. A couple of lessons need to be learned: 1) the list was compromised by illegal postings, in the mistaken belief that protection to offenders is afforded by the "right" to freedom of speech. There ain't no such thing, in the UK at least. 2) if anything like this happens again, please do not react onlist, it will only compound the risk to the list. By all means tackle the offenders offlist but make sure that the offensive/ illegal postings are brought to the listowners attention as soon as possible. We try to keep an eye on what is going on but life does get in the way sometimes.
