This was as comprehensive and deserved a victory as the score suggests and
could have been by more as a demoralised Wallsall rode their luck in the
final stages.
The first half was a bit frustrating as we played the ball about and kept
possession and almost constantly pressured the Wallsall defence but a
combination of their resolute defending and a poor final ball on many
occassions restricted our chances and Wallsall came the closest to scoring,
Ankergen making an excellent block when they got through on one occassion
and a forward just failing to reacj a cross on another. The nearest we came
was a couple of long range efforts from Kilkenny both saved by the keeper.
The breakthrough came straight from the second half kick-off, They made a
complete bollocks of the kick-off and Beckford seized the ball and ran at
the defence. They were only able to stop him at the expense of a corner.
Delph's first corner was poor but they only cleared it straigtht back to
him. His second cross was much better and Becchio forced it into the net.
They had to come out a bit more and we were able to create more openings and
our defence looked more solid then of late when they did attack. A good run
at their defence could only be halted by a foul giving rise to free kick on
the edge of the area and Robinson replaced Kilkenny (surprisingly for me,
I'd have taken Howson off) to take it. He would have scored with his first
touch but for a slight deflection off the wall.
Shortly after we were two up when everybody was expecting Robinson to cross
a free-kick into the box, but he slid it 5 yards sideways to the unmarked
Delph and he rocketed a shot that flew into the top left-hand corner like an
Exocet missile. Fabulous strike from a great young player.
We dominated the game from then on though Ricketts did show that he was
still shite by failing to trouble Ankergen, puttting the ball wide at the
end of a rare Wallsall attack.
It was left to Delph to put the icing on the cake five minutes from time
with a sweet curling shot from distance that gave the keeper nno chance.
A class finish from a class player.
Ankergen - proved himself to be, in my opinion, Leeds United's number 1
7
Richardson - good solid game 7
Michalik - looked more like the player who was playing so well at the end of
last season 7
Parker - good solid defensive display, did well going forward
7
Howson - weakest link today, many passes going astray 6
Kilkenny - decent game, surprised when he was subbed 7
Douglas - immense again, broke up attacks, used the ball well, calmed things
down on the few occassions Wallsall looked threatening
9
Delph - Fucking fantastic. One moment in the first half when he showed the
ball to two defenders then whipped it away again leaving them standing was
worth the price of my season ticket. Two superb goals. Should be able to buy
Thorpe Arch back when he goes in January :-) 9
Becchio - Superb again, worked his bollocks off, held the ball up well and
brought colleagues into the game and scored. What more can you ask of your
centre forward? 8
Beckford - Bit of a goal drought for our Jermaine but he contributed well to
the team effort and it won't be long before he's on the score sheet again
7
Robinson - looked very lively after he came on and was unlucky not to score
a couple of times 7
Prutton, Snodgrass not on long.
Up to second and looking good.
