White - coming back from injury did nothing to
suggest he is the answer to our left midfield, he shot wide when well
positioned.

But he's a left back!

Cheers!

Subject: [LU] Darlington

Only 8,000 bothered to turn out in appalling conditions to watch this - a poor
turnout when you consider we got 18k and 20k for our other 2 home games in this
competition - OK the 20k was v bradford who brought a fair few and has an
attraction for some fans but the other was Bury - pretty much on a par with
Darlington I would have thought ?
Anyway on to the game itself.
We had a mixture of first teamers and first team bench warmers for this one -
with only Aiden White making his first appearance of the season. A chance for
the likes of the 'forgotten' men - Prutton, Kilkenny,Robinson, Grella etc to
make a statement and show the manager what he is missing. Well they failed to
take their chance. Kilkenny played one lovely ball through for Kandols goal but
that apart was anonymous. Prutton also may as well not have been there. Grella
is starting to worry me a bit - he looks like he has all the moves and touches
etc but there is no end product - way too often he ran down a blind alley or
tried to beat one man too many. White - coming back from injury did nothing to
suggest he is the answer to our left midfield, he shot wide when well
positioned.
The Maverick match report on Saturday said "Bromby - oh dear" - well on last
nights performance I have to concur whole heartedly with that - whatever else
he
might be he is NOT a right back. Casper showed once again why he has fallen
behind Higgs in the pecking order - he came out to cut out a cross but missed \
barely touched the ball leaving an easy chance for their forward to pull a goal
back. Hughes - is pedestrian, he tries hard and 'does a job' but his lack of a
left foot costs us big time in terms of attacking play.
So 7 of the starters were basically poor. Somma showed nothing in the 10mins he
was on to suggest that he should be anywhere near the starting line up (if fit)
As to the other 4 starters - Lubo and Naylor were basically solid enough and it
has got to do Naylor good to get another 90mins under his belt. They both came
close with headers from set pieces and Lubo had one 30 yrd screamer that did
not
miss by much.
The other 2 Robinson and Kandol both did well. Robinson was the only one on the
pitch taking players on and showing a bit of guile - he was lucky with his goal
a free kick that a defender tried to clear with a diving header but did enough
just to deflect it past the keeper. He was at the heart of all the good things
that we did but his general fitness is open to question and his last minute
free
kick against an outfield player forced to go in goal was awful - it was right
in
the middle just outside the box, a novice keeper in wet conditions - surely all
he had to do was hit the target but oh no he put it over the bar ! That miss
notwithstanding he was MOM.
As for Kandol he was a handful for them, he it the bar with a good header and
his goal was a good one - he latched on to a great ball from Kilkenny and his
(heavy) first touch took it past the defender and he lashed it home. He held
the
ball up well and looked a threat BUT despite the songs from the Kop you have to
remember this is Tresor Kandol - the man our own fans chanted "off off" to in
one of his last appearances. If Becchio is out for a while he may get the nod -
he has done well with Beckford in the past - but ultimately we all know he is a
terrible footballer. The problem is that the alternative to Kandol is Enoch,
and
Grayson brought him on at half time , presumably to see which of them is better
- or should that be less bad ? - and Enoch was awful. Despite his size he is no
threat or prescence in the air and is useless on the floor. If Becchio is out
we
may need to dip into the loan market.
For all my moaning (this report is much longer than the game merited) we did
win
at a canter and at one point after the second went in we did expect that we
would go on and win by a hatful but took our foot off the pedal.
Still a fortnights rest for the players and treatment for some of them and we
can continue our march to the title
Dave
