Heroes?? Steady on. It was a tragedy, no doubt, but to describe them as heroes is a bit disingenuous is it not?
Why do people mock the Munich Air crash? Why do some people resent having to take a reverential bow every time this event is brought up? For many, it is not the fact that people died in the crash, but the way manu have since used the event. In 1949, Italian club Torino ENTIRE club was wiped out in an air crash. Where do we hear about this every year? It was indeed sad that a player like Duncan Edwards dies, and the other players and civilians, but in terms of real life, this was the type of accident that happens every day around the world. I have read an interesting look into the aftermath of Munich, and Non-manu fans, even weeks after the event were already tired of the prolonged and unhealthy mass hysteria surrounding this event. Manu were allowed to loan players against the rules after the crash, and as manu reached the FA Cup final, the press were whipping everyone into a frenzy, manu were "the people's team" and had a perceived god given right to the Cup. Bolton beat them 2-0 in the final however, and the Bolton team coach was stoned as it drove back through Manchester. I hate the Munich songs. I also hate having to hear about Munich from the media, and see manu exploit it commercially. Yes. That picture of the 'Busby babes' with an AIG logo on it. http://thesightisinend.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/babesmen_468x310.jpg Not to mention the fact that this massive banner is above their club shop. The whole thing stinks. Its not the biggest tragedy that has ever happened in football, and it was over 50 years ago now. Could we move on from this, and possibly have a scaled down remembrance that doesn't involve replica shirts, and selling merchandise, or forcing people to collectively mourn? The perception that many have benefited commercially and by raising their profile globally through Munich, as hard as it may be to hear, is hard to discount, and the notion that football fans should "have a soft spot" for them because of it, well, there you go. Its not pretty, and it hasn't been for a long time. So maybe its time to move on from Munich. And that includes manchester. I don't have a problem with them commemorating it themselves, but if you want to talk about heroes, please don't include the Munich air crash as such. Tragic? Yes. Heroes? No. Members of the Football Battalion that lost their lives in WWI were heroes, the deaths in Munich were a tragic loss, no more, no less. > From: [email protected] > Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 17:06:35 +0200 > To: [email protected] > CC: [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: Re: [LU] Still Smells of Fish > > How to become very unpopular........................... > > Fergie bailed us out twice. > Came to Billy's funeral. > Said that he was awed at the atmosphere at ER. > > In fact I never could handle the sickening Munich Songs that make me cringe. > How can any normal human being rejoice at the demise of so many young men & > a truly great team in the making? > > I remember the 1st game after Munich against Sheffield Wednesday in the cup. > ManU which that day was a bunch of kids & Ernie Taylor won 3-1.
