Tough-talking Tuckey tells Carr: axe your new parks

Date: 04/12/98

By JAMES WOODFORD

The new Federal Minister for Forestry and Conservation, Mr Wilson
Tuckey, would oppose the declaration of any further World
Heritage Areas and has warned the NSW Government that its new national
parks around Eden are too big.

In an interview with the Herald, Mr Tuckey said "not one more cent" of
the remaining $40 million promised by the Commonwealth to
assist timber industry restructuring in the Eden region would be
provided unless the State Government backed away from the new parks.

No money would be given until a Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) was
signed off by him.

Mr Tuckey has also instructed his department to report to him on a new
"whole-of-forest approach" to conservation, which would allow
timber harvesting in all but "icon" areas or places important for
tourism.

late).
