Dear friends and comrades in solidarity with East Timor,
the following message was released overnight to publicise our rally for
7
December

In solidarity

A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR EAST TIMOR:
 FREE XANANA

As the winds of change gather momentum in Indonesia and East Timor, many
people around the world are calling for Xanana Gusmao, the courageous
leader of East Timor to be released to participate in the UN peace talks
with Indonesia. The most prominent person leading this call is South
African President, Nelson Mandela, who for many years was the subject of
an
international campaign for his own release from prison.

The best that Australia leaders are offering, however, is to send a
solitary military attache to East Timor to monitor Indonesian troop
movements. There are two problems with this approach. The first is that
one person can do very little. He will have to rely on the Indonesian
military for transport and for the supply of information.

The second is that Australian governments have been such apologists for
the
Indonesian regime over the past two decades, very few governments will
trust Australia in this role - let alone the East Timorese. Did it ever
occur to the Howard Government to ask the East Timorese what they
thought
about this offer? It is their country after all. But when you are
happily
involved in stealing their oil and supporting the regime that is wiping
them out, maybe that seemed a little unnecessary to our leaders!!!

The fact is that Nobel Peace Laureate and external Timorese resistance
leader, Dr Jose Ramos Horta, does not support the idea. He is backed in
this view by International Commission of Jurists president, John Dowd,
who
believes that Australia will compromise itself in this role.

But not everybody is ungrateful. Multibillionaire of Indonesia, Dr
Habibie,
thinks it is a wonderful idea. Mind you, he wasn't going to let Tom
Sherman
enter East Timor to investigate the murders of the Australian
journalists
in Balibo, October 1975. As a result, Australian leaders make themselves
look foolish again.

The fact is that to monitor Indonesian troop movements and the human
rights
situation in East Timor, an adequately resourced, independent,
international team under UN auspices needs to take charge. The
Indonesian
military have shown they cannot be trusted and the Australian effort is
too
small and compromised.

At Christmas 1998, please support this important campaign to help stop
the
bloodshed and suffering in our region.
