FILM SCREENING: The Last Line of Defence: The Story of Heather Osland (a short film by Anne O'Casey) Friday 11pm, December 11 The George Cinemas 135 Fitzroy St, St Kilda (part of the Victorian College of the Arts graduate programme.) In an incredibly offensive move, the High Court has chosen International Human Rights Day to announce the rejection of Heather Osland's appeal against a 14 and a half year sentence for the murder of her husband Frank Osland in 1996. For 13 years Frank Osland terrorised and abused Heather and her children. He slapped, kicked and raped her, punched her children, beat the dog so hard it had to be put down and killed the children's cat with a piece of pipe. No one in the family was allowed to eat their meal until he had begun his, even if that meant waiting hours for him to come home. He exercised absolute control over everything Heather or her children did. She tried to leave many times, but each time she was dragged back. The High Court rejected the appeal by 2 votes to 3. For more information on Heather's story, the way the system has failed victims of domestic violence and how the campain group- the Heather Osland Release Group- organised to take the case so far, come to the "Last Line of Defence" which has its final screening this Friday (details above). yours in solidarity, arun end ============== Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List As vilified, slandered and attacked by One Nation mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.alexia.net.au/~www/mhutton/index.html
