Public Meeting:

GREEN BANS, RED UNION

In the 1970s, the most powerful force in the defence of the
environment was
the NSW Builders Labourers' Federation whose members voted
repeatedly to
stop demolition of historic buildings, the destruction of local
communities
and the degradation of the natural environment. Australian workers
led the
world in innovative and stunningly effective forms of protest
the most
serious challenge in Australian history to the speculators and
"developers"
and an inspiring example of the power of the organised working
class.

VERITY BURGMANN, co-author of a new book on the NSW BLF and the
Green Bans,
will discuss some of the lessons of the role of militant,
democratic
unionism in the struggle to defend the environment today.

THURSDAY 17 DECEMBER at 7.30pm at the
New International Bookshop,
Trades Hall,
cnr Lygon & Victoria Sts,
Carlton.
