Earth Matters Programme 63b Juliet Fox 3CR Community Radio 03 9419 8377 ComRadSat Programme 18/12/1998 CUE SHEET INTRO : "Hello and welcome to ..." OUTRO : "... see you later." DURATION : 26'30" (frogs til around 27'30) Australia's proposed radioactive waste dump Today on Earth Matters we hear from anti-uranium campaigner Dave Sweeney about the proposed "national repository" which will be a radioactive waste dump for both national and potentially international nuclear waste. The dump is currently proposed for South Australia and Dave explains the history of the need for such a facility, outlining Australia's current nuclear reactor and its accumulation of nuclear waste. Recently Friends of the Earth in England were handed a copy of a promotional video for Pangea resources - a Seattle-based nuclear waste management corporation. The company pointed to Australia as the prime location - geologically, politically, and population-wise - for an international nuclear waste facility. Dave explains the level of negotiations that Pangea has had with Australia's Government, how they've been officially denied by Government and just how horrified he is by a company promoting Australia as the place to throw your nuclear waste. We also hear excerpts from the video - complete with reassuring voice over and soothing music as Pangea explains that although most people think of nuclear waste as "glowing slime" the "truth is much more reassuring". Finally on the programme today we hear form West Australian Greens Senator, Dee Margetts, who recently introduced a Senate Bill trying to stop the importation of nuclear waste into Australia. Unfortunately it was unsuccessful and Dee outlines the need for community awareness and action on this issue in order to influence the Governemnt in their current decision making.
