The Yorta Yorta people up around Shepparton and Echuca have been fighting
for recognition and native title against the odds. Just before Christmas a
judge told them that they (and their native title case) had been washed
away the "the tide of history"--but they're not giving up.
They are appealing to the full bench of the federal court. They have also
been occupying the Dharnya cultural centre in the Barmah forest, on the
banks of the Murray. And they held a very successful rally in Shepparton on
January 30.
Now Trade Unionists for Wik (TUFW) is organising a solidarity trip to the
Dharnya centre to show our support and to learn from the Yorta Yorta.
The event will run over two days (March 20 and 21) with numbers limited to
around 54. There will be two workshops run by the Yorta Yorta, a guided
walk of the forest, and a workshop run by TUFW on the role played by unions
in the fight for land rights.
To get a brochure with full information on prices and the program, email
your name and address to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call Ellen or Gwynnyth at
Trades Hall (9662 3511) during office hours or David on 0418 316 310 at any
time.
Bookings are essential and need to be made with payment by March 12.
[The next TUFW organising meeting will be on Tuesday, 16 February at 6pm in
meeting room 3, third floor, new Trades Hall building. All welcome]
