International day of Solidarity for Indonesian and East Timor students
ASIET is sponsoring, supporting and helping organise an International day of
solidarity for Indonesian and East Timorese students scheduled for Saturday,
May 22, one day after the Indonesian student movement forced the resignation
of Suharto.
Given the vanguard role being played by the student movement in Indonesia
and East Timor at the moment, ASIET feels that it is extremely urgent to
provide the maximum support for these two movements in their separate
countries.
In Australia, there will be marches, rallies, public meeting and other
events in most major cities. On the campuses and high schools, the campaign
is being spearheaded by the youth organisation Resistance, alongside other
activists, as well as Indonesian and East Timorese students and activists
living in Australia.
The themes of the day are:
Solidarity with Indonesian and East Timorese students!
Free East Timor! Freedom in Indonesia!
Release all imprisoned and disappeared students!
Free Xanana, Budiman and Dita Sari!
End all military ties with the Habibie-Wiranto regime!
ASIET is appealing for all organisations internationally to get involved as
part of the international network of activist organisations organising
events on this day. Just click here to let ASIET know as soon as possible if
you can organise an event so we can publicise and support it in Australia.
