Govt outlines sale conditions for ABC Online
The Federal Government has outlined a range of conditions to apply to any
sale of the ABC's Internet service.
The privatisation proposal has been raised by ABC board member Michael Kroger.
Mr Kroger says $250 million could be raised by selling 49 per cent of ABC
Online and allowing the owners to run advertisements on the Internet site.
He says that commercial service would be quarantined from the rest of the
ABC's programs.
"There would be no compromising at all of the quality, integrity and
independence of those things being produced," Mr Kroger said.
Managing Director Brian Johns says Online should not be sold.
"It's not a limb that can be severed," Mr Johns said.
The Government says a privatised Online service would have to be
independent of the ABC, but subject to editorial controls.
The Opposition says privatisation of Online would be the thin end of the
wedge for the rest of the national broadcaster.
