Hands off Tinky Winky! We in Radical Women, a national feminist
organization, stand ready to defend the lavender, purse-toting Teletubbie
recently attacked by Christian fundamentalist Jerry Falwell for being "a
gay role-model for children."
On the one hand, it's a case of conspicuous homophobia, On the other
hand, children's shows should include gay role models. If Tinky's gay,
more power to him!
It�s silly and sinister at the same time. The same conservatives who used
to make a career out of targeting "reds," and saw communists behind every
bush, are now on a "lavender" witchhunt. Falwell is whipping up a
dangerous climate of bigotry that leads to incidents such as the murder
of gay college student Matthew Shepard in Wyoming.
It's time to put a stop to this campaign of cultural-cleansing. What's
next? Will rightwing crusaders charge Barney, the popular TV dinosaur,
with promoting bisexuality just because he's purple?
