FORUM
CRIME PREVENTION SOLUTIONS for NSW
Sponsored by
the ASICJ, the Law Society of NSW and the NSW Bar Association
with the support of the
Standing Committee on Law and Justice
Saturday, 27 February 1999
9.30am - 4pm
Law Society Building
Level 2
170 Phillip Street, Sydney
The NSW Branch of the Australian Section of the International Commission of
Jurists (ASICJ (NSW Branch)), the Law Society of NSW and the NSW Bar
Association have had a longstanding interested in examining ways to improve
the NSW system of criminal justice. Each organisation monitors and, if
appropriate, comments on legislation and procedure. In addition, they seek
to support and promote crime prevention strategies. For example, on 26
October 1998, the ASICJ co-hosted, with the NSW Legislative Council
Standing Committee on Law and Justice, a Conference on Crime Prevention
through Social Support. It was attended by international speakers and
focused on early intervention programs and examined:
. which crime prevention strategies worked; and
. the costs and benefits of crime prevention programs
The general conclusion of the Conference was that, in the long run, early
prevention strategies had an effect on reducing crime and were also far
less costly than legislative responses such as the "three strikes and you
are in".
To build on the experience of this very successful Conference, it has been
decided to convene a forum, of about 150 participants, who will endeavour
to formulate solution-based strategies for crime prevention, specifically
for NSW.
The forum will take the form of short presentations, given by experts in
the field, followed by questions and discussion.
Cost: $35 to cover the cost of a light lunch.
