Press release
Ralko Hydroelectric Dam

We call upon the International Community for the defence the Chilean
Indigenous People who are being victims of human rights violations.

Last Thursday, 18-2-99 The multinational company Endesa stop
construction at the Ralko Bio-Bio dam because of the indigenous
communities intervention along with several other social
organisations.

These organisations are opposed to the construction of the Dam
because of its ecologically sensitive location. Also because if its
genocide characteristics intended to wipe out the Mapuche Pewenche
people completely.

The Brutal intervention of the police forces ended with 28 arrested
and 9 injured.

On Friday February 19, Chilean Police forces began removing by force
indigenous people from their ancestral land which has belong to the
Temulemu community from Malleco in the VIII Region(South of Chile).
The police arrested 10 people, among them, men, women and children
and the elder pascual Pichun were injured. The police has also taken
away their supply of wood, tools and machinery.

On Saturday 20 february, the Chilean government ordered the police to
apply the same method used against the Choin Lafkenche located in the
same region as the temulemu community.

Once again we cal upon the international community and anyone who has
respect for human rights and the indigenous people's self-
determination.

We ask you to work in solidarity with the Mapuche people who are
repressed by the Chilean government.
