of South London, produced for a Reclaim the Streets party.

produced for the South London RTS party, June 1998.

1817 - Black abolitionist, orator Frederick Douglass lives,
born a slave, founder of the influential The North Star
newspaper in Rochester, New York.

1853 - Cuban revolutionist Jos� Mart� (1853-1895) lives,
Havana. Cuban poet, essayist & journalist, who became symbol
of Cuba's struggle for independence. The popular song
"Guantanamera" is based on a poem by Marti'. Worked on
underground papers & sent to jail & forced into exile (three
columns & you're out?)

1898 - Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht lives, Augsburg,
Germany. Great German political dramatist & poet, inventor of modern
"epic theater," the "gest," & the "alienation effect." Doctor,
theatrical reformer.
Fled rightwing German Nazis. After moving to the US, fled from the
Land of the Free when rightwing HUAC comes after him during
the Cold War.


1917 - American labor agitator Tom Mooney falsely convicted of
fatal bombing. He will be Pardoned & released 22 1/2 years from now.
