Kumarangk Legal Defence Fund Inc. PO Box 3168 Rundle Mall SA 5000 http://www.green.net.au/hindmarsh email: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ---------------------------------------------------- Attn: News Editor, Information Technology Writer 4 March 1999 MEDIA RELEASE *Website launched over Hindmarsh Island defamation allegations* The Kumarangk Legal Defence Fund today announced the re-launch of its website dealing with 10 defamation cases against 18 people and organisations who are being sued by Tom and/or Wendy Chapman in relation to the Hindmarsh Island bridge affair. The website was originally established last year, but was closed down by the British internet service provider after they received a letter alleging that the site contained material defamatory of the Chapmans. The KLDF received no prior notification of this complaint and were given no right of reply by the service provider. A new host has been found and the site updated and extended to over 4 times its original size, although the KLDF have now themselves received a complaint from the Chapmans lawyers about the site. Spokesperson for the KLDF, Mr Tom Glynn said, We believe the site contains information of public concern about the impact of a series of defamation cases and other actions on an important political campaign. This raises issues about the whole way political debate is allowed to proceed in this state. The site at http://www.green.net.au/hindmarsh, contains: * information about the cases and the KLDF; * updates on the cases; * the letter from the Chapmans lawyer about the site, and the KLDF reply; * MLC Angus Redfords ill-informed parliamentary question about the KLDF, and the KLDF reply; * an extensive article from the KLDF - Tricky Legal Business: The Impact of Legal Processes on the Campaign Against the Hindmarsh Island Bridge; * images of Kumarangk/Hindmarsh Island and the defendants. For more information, CHECK THE SITE, and/or contact Mr Tom Glynn, KLDF Spokesperson: Ph 8351 2404 ---------------------------------------------------- The KLDF assists in the organisation of financial and legal support for the opponents of the Hindmarsh Island bridge who are being sued in connection with the campaign to stop the bridge. The KLDF can be contacted as above, or through its Public Officer, Greg Ogle, Ph: (08) 8303 3392.
