WORKING WOMEN FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Brussels. February 19 1999 (ICFTU Info): The world's
largest-ever gathering of women trade unionists will take
place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, May 18 - 21, as women from
over 100 countries converge for the ICFTU's 7th World
Women's Conference.

"Working Women in the 21st Century - Demanding our space,
taking our place" This is the conference theme, and
participants will be debating ways of transforming
globalisation so that it reflects the needs of women, and
can be used as a tool for social justice. Women, many of
whom are the sole breadwinners for their families, have
suffered most from the effects of globalisation, which has
meant factory closures and government cuts in many countries
.

Conference Activities include workshops, panel discussions
on the impact of the current financial crisis on women
worldwide; effective organising; women as a dynamic force in
the trade unions; and women taking their place in 21st
Century society. There will be a Special Presentation on
Women in Latin America; plus an Open Forum in which women
share their experiences of fighting for equality. Two new
publications on: "Growing older - fighting for dignity" (on
older workers), and the "Primer on a Positive Action
Programme for Women in Development" will be presented.

The Conference is being hosted in Brazil by ICFTU-affiliated
unions: the General Confederation of Workers (CGT), Forca
Sindical (FS) and the United Workers Centre (CUT), and takes
place at the Hotel Gloria,- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between
May 18 - 21 1999
