The chief of staff of the Australian Defence Forces is currently in Jakarta
having cosy talks with his opposite number.
Meanwhile the Indonesian armed forces (ABRI) continue to arm Timorese
paramilitaries and to intervene against workers' and students' struggles in
Indonesia.
Howard seems to have no problem with this, but many of us do. That's why
there will be a picket of the Australian Defence Forces offices at 661
Bourke St (between King and Spencer) on Friday, 19 March, between 12.30 and
1.30pm.
The picket has been endorsed so far by RMIT Student Union, University
Students for East Timor, Jacob Varghese (federal president, NUS), and
Socialist Worker.
The demands are: freedom for East Timor now, break all military ties with
Indonesia.
Similar pickets will take place on the same day in Sydney, Brisbane and
Canberra.
