UN to determine native title discrimination

A United Nations committee in Geneva will begin detailed
questioning of a senior Australian Government lawyer on the Native
Title Amendment Act today, to determine whether the legislation
discriminates against Aborigines.

Australia's appearance before the committee is unprecedented, and
the urgent UN request for information has previously only been
used against countries such as Rwanda, Sudan and Yugoslavia.

Committee members say they have received detailed submissions
claiming the Native Title law is in breach of Australia's
international treaty obligations.

ATSIC Commissioner Geoff Clark, who is in Geneva to brief UN
officials, says Aborigines are not seeking to embarrass the
Government, but believe it must accept international scrutiny.
