Employment group questions youth jobless rate

The Federal Government-owned job agency, Employment National, has
questioned the accuracy of the official youth unemployment figure,
which remains above 20 per cent.

Employment National says the Australian Bureau of Statistics
figures for youth unemployment are inflated because students in the
15 to 19 year age group, who are studying full-time, are classified
as unemployed.

The job agency also says it is struggling in many areas to find
young people to fill skilled positions, including traineeships and
apprenticeships.

Employment National spokeswoman Margaret Fairman says the figures
should be reviewed.

"When you take out the number of people who are studying full-time
the percentage of the labor force within the 15 to 19 year age
group that is unemployed is actually 9.6 per cent," she said.

"It is still probably too high, but it is nothing like the 20 per
cent figure which is bandied around."

I would think that: - if people who are jobless and looking for part
time work are not to be classified as unemployed - then people who have
part time work shouldn't be classified as 'employed'.....
