PRESS RELEASE

The Communist Party of Australia has categorically denied that it has
allocated its preferences in the Legislative Council (Upper House) to
flow to Glenn Druery's "People First/Republic 2001) group as claimed in
the "Sydney Morning Herald" (17/3/99)

General Secretary, Peter Symon said that "Representatives of our Party
did attend two meetings of parties and groups called by Mr Druery but it
soon became apparent that a game was being played which had the
objective of electing Mr Druery.

"The Communist Party has given its first and second preferences to the
Progressive Labour Party and the The Greens with the Australian
Democrats and the ALP a little further down the list. Out of the 80
groups on the ballot paper, Mr Druery's group has been allocated the
CPA's 77th preference.

Mr Symon urged voters to take care in voting in the Upper House.
"Because of the great complexity and size of the Upper House ballot
paper it is very likely that most will vote above the line" , he said.
"We urge all voters to give their vote to legitaimate progressive
parties and not be misled by some high-sounding names given to some
"fly-by-night", spurious or opportunist parties and groups. The
preferences of some of these groups and parties have been coralled and
could serve purposes that voters did not know about, did not intend and
may not want", concluded Mr Symon.
