The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union present:
Gordonstone Miners Public Meeting
Speakers - Dave Weller (Gordonstone miner) & Jim Lambley (CFMEU Mining Qld
Vice President - based in Emerald)
5.30 pm Wednesday March 31st
CFMEU Building: Level 4, 361 Kent St Sydney

In 1997 a statue was erected to the Gordonstone miners in recognition of
their efforts in setting world's best production records. A few months
later the entire CFMEU production and engineering workforce was sacked for
refusing to go along with individual contracts.

Then, like something out of the Wild West, the employer brought 70 armed
thugs into town - as revealed on Channel 9's Sunday programme - in an
attempt to intimidate and provoke the illegally sacked workers. Miners
families were evicted from their homes on Christmas Eve.

In February the notorious Rio Tinto entered the picture, buying the mine
from American multinational Arco in a very curious deal. Using a $2 shelf
company, Rio secretly recruited 22 scabs and registered a sub-standard
non-union deal designed to apply to all future workers at the mine.
Now 17 months after it began the struggle rages on.

* In the barren surrounds of Central Queensland the Gordonstone miners
are fighting one of the key battles against the corporate/right wing crusade
to crush the union movement and decimate workers' living standards.
* Hear their extraordinary story and show your support for these
courageous workers fighting on behalf of us all.
