March and Rally
Canberra - meet at Garema Place 12.30pm 28 March 1999 for march to Tent
Embassy
Sydney - meet at Hyde Park north - near the Archibald fountain for a march
to First Fleet Park, west Circular Quay 28 March 1999, 2 PM
March 28 is Palm Sunday - traditionally a day to march against uranium
mining and nuclear isssues. This Palm Sunday is especially important as
major new mining and waste ventures are being approved almost daily by the
Federal Government:
In the past few months the Howard government has
1. approved the new Beverley uranium mine (using the world's worst
industrial practice of insitu- leach mining which contaminates the surface
and groundwater - used only in the former Soviet union and Eastern Europe)
2. About to approve a new $300 million nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights
(approval expected early next week -after the state election!)
3. Today (26 March 99), opened a $2 billion expansion of Roxby Downs Uranium
Mine
4. Approved the Jabiluka uranium mine inside Kakadu National Park - a World
heritage area
and appears to be having discussions with an English company, Pangea, about
creating a dump in South Australia for the worl'ds nuclear waste (see Sydney
Morning Herald, Friday 26 March 99, p 7 for more details)
Hope you and your frineds can attend the rally on Sunday to protest these
changes
And could you pass on the details of the rally to anyone you think may be
interested.
