Students throughout Australia will today rally against the federal
government's voluntary student unionism (VSU) legislation.
In Sydney, students will march along central city streets to highlight
their anger over the Bill.
"Students know the government doesn't care about choice for students, they
know the real agenda is to silence students," Sydney University Students'
Representative Council president Luke Whitington said.
Debate on the Higher Education Legislation Amendment Bill began in the
parliament yesterday.
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Australian Education
Union (AUE) have stated their support for the students' fight against VSU.
In a joint statement, NTEU president Carolyn Allport and AEU president
Sharan Burrow said student services could be downgraded as a result of the
legislation.
The National Union of Students have organised central rallies in Melbourne,
Sydney and Brisbane today as well as smaller rallies in all other capitals
and some regional centres.
Students from Sydney University, University of Technology (UTS), the
University of New South Wales and Macquarie University will meet at Sydney
University's Fisher Library at 11.30am today.
Mr Whitington said they planned to march down Broadway to UTS, then on to
Town Hall.
