Thirty years ago, in May 1969, one million workers went on strike across
Australia to free Tramways Union official Clarrie O'Shea from jail.

He had been jailed for refusing to bow to the penal powers, the then
equivalent of the Workplace Relations Act. After three days of strikes he
was freed and the penal powers were never used again.

Celebrate this magnificent chapter of Australian working class history with
Socialist Worker at our annual May Day dinner.

The dinner will be at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 1, at the Retreat Hotel, 280
Sydney Road, Brunswick.

The evening will include:

* John Gillies, a striker and Communist Party activist in 1969

* A multimedia presentation on the strike

* Three-course meal

* Entertainment, including stand-up comedy

* Drinks at bar prices.
