Human horror about one to one violence is very deep. Soldiers have to be
taught how to kill and it's something many can never learn. And so are
themselves killed. For survivors, the psychological scars remain ingrained.
And yet, through violent videos we are training children much as we train
soldiers. Behavioural scientists are now very interested in what is being
called, believe it or not, Killology.

PRODUCER's SUPPLEMENT:
After 5000 years, behavioural scientists are now looking for the truth
about what really goes on in combat. Colonel David Grossman, a counsellor
at several recent American school shootings and whose recent book has been
nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, talks on Background Briefing about what he
calls "killology".
Grossman coined the term to describe the study of the profound
psychological and
physiological effects of extreme inter-human violence.
Most people cannot kill other people, and have to be carefully taught to
kill if they are
going to be effective, and survive, as soldiers. Colonel Grossman also talks
about how violent videos and video games may be, in effect, desensitising
and even training young people to become killers on the streets...and, as
we've just seen again in America, in schools.
