Australian Financial Review http://www.afr.com.au/content/990501/news/news2.html May 1, 1999 Uranium mine gets go-ahead By Louise Dodson The Federal Government on Friday gave the final go-ahead to Heathgate Resources to proceed with its Beverley uranium mine, which is expected to generate export income of $35 million a year. The Industry, Science and Resources Minister, Senator Nick Minchin, on Friday said the Government was satisfied that the proposed South Australian mine had cleared all environmental requirements to proceed. The mine was considered in December last year by the Environment Minister, Senator Robert Hill, who at that time raised environmental concerns about the impact of the project on the Beverley aquifer and other water bodies in the area. Senator Hill subsequently received advice that the aquifer was confined and the project was cleared to proceed. "The Commonwealth is satisfied that there is no environmental reason why the project should not proceed," Senator Minchin said. "We are satisfied that a hydraulic connection does not exist between the northern component of the Beverley aquifer and other surrounding groundwater." However, Senator Minchin warned Heathgate Resources it would need to comply with all environmental requirements before an export permit was issued. c This material is subject to copyright and any unauthorised use, copying or mirroring is prohibited. ************************************************************************* This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
