Environment $$ and the Victorian State Budget
On May 4th the Victorian State Government handed down its budget. $21
million was given out for new environmental initiatives, while $18 million
was allocated toward environmental infrastructure. Today on Earth Matters
we hear from Esther Abram, Director of Environment Victoria, about just
what "environmental infrastructure" might be and how the environment fared
in the recent State Budget.
Queensland State Environment Conference=20
On the first weekend in May the Cairns and Far North Queensland Environment
Centre (CAFNEC) hosted the Queensland State Conservation Groups Conference
in Cairns. Environmentalists and others gathered together to discuss a
range of issues including land clearing, prawn trawling, water and
indigenous issues.
Today on Earth Matters we hear from CAFNEC's Coordinator, Nikki Hungerford,
about the issues addressed and the conference and some of the outcomes.
Saving the Headwaters Forests in Northern California
Recently in the USA, the Pacific Lumber logging company - owned by Charles
Herwitz - sold some 12 square miles of the Headwaters Forests in northern
California to the American Government. The settlement was supposed to
placate loggers and environmentalists - but environmentalists are less than
impressed with the deal. The region is home to ancient redwood trees - some
over 2000 years old and 12 feet in diameter. One such tree, named Luna, has
been the home to environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill for over a=
year.=20

International News Gathering Service or WINGS.
