Subject: The First Australian Tribunal on Women's Human Rights

The First Australian Tribunal on Women's Human Rights is being held on
Friday 21 May 1999, 10am to 4pm, at the Melbourne Town Hall. Entry is free.
Doors open at 9.30am. Twelve women will present their stories during the
day.

The first session will run from 10am to noon, and will include six
testimonies and the Opening "moments" with an indigenous welcome and an
address by Jill Singer, columnist with the Melbourne Herald-Sun.

The second session will run from 1-4pm, and will include six testimonies, a
short performance from the Melbourne Workers Theatre, and the comments of
the Tribunal Members - Pat O'Shane (magistrate), Zita Antonios (HREOC),
Colin Dillon (ATSIC), and Maria Dimopoulos (diversity trainer and activist).

Testimonies will be presented on the following (broadly defined) issues:
The sterilisation of young women with intellectual disabilities;
Outworkers; Prisons; Income support and older women; the ramifications of
sexual abuse in the family for young women; discrimination in the provision
of housing; the decline of national machineries for indigenous Australians;
issues raised by members of the Stolen Generation; discrimination against
lesbian couples; Australia's refugee determination process; and issues of
domestic violence for women living in a rural area; and issues of domestic
violence for women sponsored into Australia for marriage.

The Tribunal will be launched at the Women's Human Rights Cartoon
Exhibition and Sale on Friday 14 May, 6.30pm, at 71 Argyle St, Fitzroy (the
Overseas Service Bureau). Reprising her 'official opener' role, Moira Rayner
will speak on the night. Entry by donation. Delightful food donated by
Spontino's of St Kilda.
