workers in the Harris electronics factories in Malaysia are organising a =
picket.
The Malaysian government has been attempting to stop the organisation =
and recognition of unions in electronics factories for many years.

This is a notice that the above union will be staging a picket as =
follows
Date: 15th May 1999
Time: 11 am - 1 pm
Location: In front of the Harris Factory gates
at 73 Lorong Enggang, (off Jalan Enggang)

Background
The union held a picket last Saturday to draw the attention of the =
Harris
Management to the demands of the union and its members. We demand that
Harris management immediately start negotiations with the union leading =
to
a collective agreement.
Since last Saturday, the Harris Management have yet to respond to our
demand. The members of the union will again stage a picket this Saturday
til our demands are met.=20
The management of the Harris Advanced Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. (HAT)
located at the Ulu Kelang - Ampang FTZ have been resisting the in-house
union since its formation in 1989. HAT is an off-shore semiconductor
manufacturing plant of the US Multinational, Harris Corp Melbourne =
Florida,
employing about 3000 employees.
We are drawing attention of the management of Harris to stop all =
litigation
against the union and the Director-General of Trade Union Affairs =
(Ministry
of Human Resources Malaysia) and start negotiations immediately with the
union to conclude a collective agreement which have been PENDING FOR THE
LAST 10 YEARS!
Harris Copr have announced plans to sell off the semiconductor division =
of
the Harris which includes HAT, among other facilities. In view of the
impending sales, we feel that HAT is leaving the employees in a lurchh
after making the employees of HAT "sacrifice" for the company last yeyar =
by:
- delaying and then reducing the increment and reducing the bonus
- deducting the annual leaves for the company's shut-down
- offering voluntary retrenchment
