Dear Leftlink subscribers in the SE Queensland area:

This is an invitation to join Brisbane Left Organising (BLO), a new
newsgroup to serve left activists in the SE Queensland area.

BLO's main purpose is to inform subscribers about forthcoming meetings,
demos, conferences, actions, seminars etc. in the Brisbane area. It is not
intended as a discussion list.

BLO is a participatory list which will rely on exchange of information
between subscribers. While the moderator sends out some information, the
list will only succeed because subscribers regularly contribute.

So please sign up, tell your comrades about this list and please
participate by sending in the details of any upcoming campaigns and actions
which you know about. Encourage other individuals and groups on the Left in
SE Queensland to use BLO.

HOW TO SIGN UP?

Simply send a blank message to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

OR: just reply to me and I will add you on.

Following are the conditions of membership of the BLO-list. I have drawn
these up on the basis of the experience of the highly successful Leftlink
in Victoria which has 500 subscribers and which has now been going for more
than three years. However, this list has no connection with Leftlink.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

In solidarity

Tom Bramble

CONDITIONS OF USE OF BLO-LIST

BLO is a moderated list that anyone can join, whose messages can be read
only by members and whose membership details are not open (in order to
protect privacy).

The fact that BLO is a moderated list means that extraneous messages such
as requests for subscriptions and other messages that do not meet the
guidelines are not published. BLO's primary purpose is to provide
up-to-date news and action alerts on progressive campaigns.

There is a huge amount of material on the internet that could potentially
contribute to fulfilling this purpose. So in order to ensure that BLO
retains its focus and that subscribers are not overwhelmed with postings,
BLO will not publish:

* attachments

* messages longer than 10K. (Longer messages should be placed on the web
and an URL pointing to where the information can be found, posted to BLO.
If you do not have a web page, there are a number of ISPs that provide free
web pages on the internet - for example:
- Crosswinds
- Fortune City
- Geocities
- Pemail
- Xoom)

* responses to previously posted messages. (BLO is not a discussion list.)
There are other Australian sites on the internet that publish unmoderated
political comment - for example, the newsgroup, aus.politics which
publishes contributions from both sides of politics. An eclectic mix of
more than 200 alternative and progressive mailing lists - some of which are
unmoderated - can be accessed by writing to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In the
body of your message type: "lists"

The American based, Spoons Collective also hosts a variety of political
email discussion lists. For further information see:
http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/~spoons/index2.html You are
encouraged to utilise these and other resources if you are seeking
political discussion.)

* messages regarding internal struggles within organisations or between
organisations

* ads for private enterprise

* material which on balance, in the opinion of the Moderator leans more
towards political discussion rather than news

* general, non-action oriented news about campaigns.

Please note: Reminder messages regarding upcoming events will be limited to
one - that is, BLO will publish a notice of an upcoming event plus one
reminder.

HOW BLO IS MODERATED

In order for a message to be broadcast to the list it must meet the
following guidelines:

* Refer to campaigns, activities and initiatives which promote the
interests of the labour movement, peace or environmental sustainability,
or which are aimed at redressing inequities arising from sexual
orientation, gender, physical or mental ability, class, race or nationality.

* Use language that is not offensive - i.e not racist, sexist or
aggressively sectarian.

* Contain the real name (not pen name or student ID number) and email
address of the contributor. (This is a necessary measure to prevent "flame"
wars).

BLO is currently moderated by Tom Bramble ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Disclaimer

The moderator takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the information
published. Publication of information on the list does not indicate
endorsement of any political analysis, campaign, activity or initiative by
BLO.

How to send information to BLO

The address for posting messages to the list is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When formatting your message, please ensure that it is no more than 72
characters in width and that it in ASCII. Messages that do not conform to
these guidelines may be returned.

REMOVAL FROM THE LIST

The moderator reserves the right to cancel a subscription at any time if:
* mail to the subscriber's address is bounced for seven days in a row
* the subscriber repeatedly sends abusive mail to the moderator.

Anyone who is removed from the list because of bounced mail is welcome to
rejoin once their mail service is restored to normal.
