FREE TRADE & CORPORATE CONTROL
Today's program looks at issues of global economics & international trade
agreements. And at local community efforts to resist the wave of globalised
business and economic liberalisation policies currently holding sway around
the world.
DISAPPEARING PUBLICS - NIKOS PAPASTERGIADIS is a Research Fellow at the
Universities of Manchester & Melbourne. As such, he's in a good position to
compare the disappearance of public culture, institutions &
political/social/economic space in the UK, Europe & Australia. Over the
past few months, he's been coordinating a series of public forums on just
this issues entitles "Disappearing Publics". He discusses the privatisation
of the public sphere & the importance of community resistance against this
global trend.
The 3rd & final Disappearing Publics Forum will be held in Sydney at 7pm on
Tuesday June 29 at the Artspace Visual Arts Centre, Woolloomooloo. Ring
(03) 9368 1899 for details.
WOMEN AGAINST APEC - This year New Zealand plays host to the Asia Pacific
Economic Cooperation Forum & an offical APEC Women Leaders Meeting has been
planned for the end of June as part of the APEC activities. This week, NZ
women opposed to the agreement are holding their own conference in protest
against global corporatisation & free trade. MAXINE GAY is one of the
organisers of the Fourth Anti-APEC Women's Conference which starts this
Saturday in Wellington. She's also the Secretary of the alternative trade
union peak body, the NZ Trade Union Federation & believes unions should be
strongly opposed to trade liberalisation agreements like APEC.
FRIDAY JUNE 18 - has been dubbed "a day of protest, action & carnival in
financial centres across the globe" against global exploitation &
corporatisation & in support of local community-based initiatives.
Activities are taking place around the world to mark this day. Keep an eye
out for J18 activities in your local area this Friday.
