Dr Hanan Ashrawi captured the international spotlight at the 1991
Middle East peace conference in Madrid with her eloquent articulation
of the Palestinian view. Frustrated by deadlock in the peace process
with Israel, economic hardship and alleged corruption, she resigned
from President Arafat's reshuffled Cabinet in late 1998. She is a
critic of the Palestine National Authority as well as Israeli
violations of Palestinian human rights.
