Negotiating the new Environment Act last week, the Democrats failed to get
tree clearing listed as a matter important enough for the Federal
government to have a say in.
And yet figures just out show that Queensland is bulldozing trees at the
rate of nearly 2 million hectares a year. Salt will become a catastrophe
there, as it already has elsewhere.
Agriculture in Australia has to change.

The ramifications of the environmental land and water crises now facing
Australia are paralysing in their magnitude and implications.
Forthcoming figures from the usually conservative Australian Bureau of
Agricultural and Resource Economics will indicate that the clearing of
vegetation in states such as Queensland is occurring at six times official
government estimates. And contributing to the acceleration of global
warming. Rising ground water tables and the consequent salinisation of the
soil is rendering huge tracts of land unsuitable for agriculture - and
habitation.
While growing numbers of experts agree that European broadacre agricultural
techniques have largely failed, no easy solutions loom for the creation of
a new agriculture in tune with our fragile land.
