Plenary topics [panels or single talks]

1. Is Marx still relevant for the 21st Century?

Revisiting basic Marxist concepts -- class and class struggle, the
revolutionary potential of the working class, historical materialism,
the capitalist state. The experiences of the 20th century.

2. The state of the world capitalist economy

Arrogant capitalist confidence and obscene wealth at the top --
escalating inequalities and grinding misery at the base. Can the 21st
century be other than a continuation of the 20th -- depressions, war,
revolution?

3. Global political and military strategies of imperialism

Washington's goals for its Balkan wars. Ramifications of the US-Japan
military cooperation, the Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement,
escalating India-Pakistan tensions.

4. Problems of revolutionary strategy in advanced capitalist
countries

How to make a revolution where there's no revolutionary crisis yet?
How
to prepare for mass action where the masses can still be bought off?
The
interaction of social-democracy and imperialism. The material basis
of
social democracy.

5. Problems of revolutionary strategy in developing countries

The experience of the Russian Revolution. Does the concept of
democratic
revolution still apply? What role for armed struggle? Debates on
revolutionary strategy in Indonesia, the Philippines, India,
Pakistan.

6. Will the socialist countries all yield to capitalist pressures?

What happened in The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe? How far has
capitalist restoration gone in China? The situation in Cuba, Vietnam,
North Korea.

7. Recent experiences in trade union and labour organising.

How can we build, or rebuild, our basic organisations? What
experiences
in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Australia can we learn from? How
can
workers in the imperialist and the semi-colonial countries help each
other?

8. Marxism and the national question

Will the struggle for national rights still be relevant in the 21st
century? The views of Marx and Lenin, and the experiences in the USSR
and China. The background to the Balkan Wars. National questions in
Asia.

9. Women and the fight for socialism

Key issues and campaigns, North and South. The rise of the women's
liberation movement and the assault from capitalist ideology and from
postmodernism, `DIY' feminism, and `radical' feminism.

10. What basis for international left collaboration and socialist
renewal?

Which way forward for developing new networks of Marxist parties?
What
should be the political and organisational principles on which to
base
collaboration and solidarity? The experience of previous
International
workers organisations, and the dangers to be avoided.

11. Can humanity survive the 21st century?

The environmental time-bombs from the continuing ravages of profit
mad
capitalism -- global warming, nuclear wars and nuclear cycles,
genetic
tinkering and man-made plagues. Can we afford another century of
capitalist madness?
