Edited summary UPHOLD OUR RIGHT TO PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY! On the 21st of July 1999, another 38 people (among them 4 women) will know the verdict of their case. They were part of the group of 127 people who were arrested at Dataran Merdeka during one of the peaceful gatherings calling for justice in the country. All 38 have been charged for Illegal Assembly. What to expect on the 21st of July 1999: 1) They will all be released. This is a most unlikely scenario. 2) A number of them will be convicted or at worst, all of them will be found guilty. What is the sentence? They can be fined not less than RM 2000 or not more than RM 10,000 and imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year. What can we do? 1) GIVE A DONATION An exorbitant fine is expected to be imposed by the courts. In the previous cases, a fine of RM 5,000 was imposed and their bail for the appeal was an additional RM 2,500. Each person charged incurred expenses up to RM 7,500 each. We accept expect a similar situation on 21st July, whereby each accused will incur cost between RM 5,000 to RM 8,000. We call upon all friends and organisations, to either give a donation or a loan to help lessen the burden of those charged.
