STAFF- STUDENT SOLIDARITY MEETING
2nd wave Industrial Relations Campaign

As you would know, Peter Reith has released a legislative blueprint for the
second wave of industrial relations reform, which is set to destroy
workers' rights across the country. The second wave represents the
culmination of the Coalition government's ideological plan to destroy
collective organisation and representation, which started with the
Workplace Relations Act in 1996 and recently reared its ugly head again
with the (now defeated) voluntary student unionism legislation.

Workers across the country are organising a mass campaign against the
second wave legislation. In Victoria, the Trades Hall Council has set up a
community campaign office which is being run by a collective including reps
from the Fairwear campaign, church groups, trade unions, the National Union
of Students and other community organisations and which will be planning
campaign directions. Already planned is a mass community rally on 12 August
at 10.30 am starting from Trades Hall. The next planning meeting is set for
Wednesday 4 August at 5.00pm at Trades Hall, corner Lygon and Victoria Sts,
Carlton.

Students for the most part are workers, and will be under attack as workers
in much the same way as staff if the legislation is not defeated. TAFE
students in particular will be affected by the legislation as many are
apprentices in the workforce.

Because of this common interest between students and staff, and because of
the principle that collective action is stronger than individual action, it
is suggested that TAFE and university students and rank and file NTEU staff
get together in solidarity against the second wave, to plan involvement in
the campaign and to develop communication links. This meeting will be a
precursor to the community campaign planning meeting on the Wednesday, and
will hopefully (amongst other things) develop campaign ideas for that
meeting.
