Malaysia - The Struggle for Democracy

Economic crisis and political turmoil have hit Malaysian workers hardest.
The Malaysian government has stepped up its attacks against democratic
institutions and human rights.
The democracy movement is refusing to bow to this pressure and has called
for international support.

Ampang Free Trade Zone, 15 May.
Harris electronics workers picket their factory, to demand recognition of
their union, refused by Harris and by the Malaysian government for ten
years.

Niah District, Sarawak, 24 June.
Armed police are deployed to support a company bulldozing Indigenous
people's land, against the protest of the entire Indigenous community.

Kuala Lumpur, 21 July.
The Magistrate's Court fines and gives jail sentences to 21 people arrested
for illegal assembly during Reformasi demonstrations calling for democratic
rights in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur, 28 July.
Human rights activist Irene Fernandez and six others are charged with
illegal assembly for supporting workers protesting the demolition of their
houses. The demonstrators are baton charged.

Lenggeng Detention Center, July 30.
More than 600 people detained for illegal immigration protest over a water
cut of 3 days at the camp.
This is the second time in 16 months that there is a major protests by
detainees.

Defend Malaysian trade unionists from goverment repression.
