*Media blamed for public concern about genetically modified food*

The CSIRO has blamed media scare-mongering for the public concern about
genetically modified food.

Its director of National Awareness, Julian Cribb, has told a national food
conference in Adelaide that Australian media interest in genetic technology
has increased dramatically in recent months.

He says it follows the use of terms such as "Frankenstein Food".

He says Australia is following the lead of Britain, where public concern
about genetic modification is greatest.

Mr Cribb says when people are able to buy foods with greater health and
longevity benefits, they will be more accepting.

"I really don't see this as much different from the debate that went on
over the motorcar about 90 odd years ago," he said.

"They put the bloke with the red flag in front of it, and prohibited the
car to go at more than four miles per hour, because it scared the horses.

"Society is just reacting with apprehension," Mr Cribb said.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Boy, were they ever right about those motorcars too! If only people had
listened and kept the 4 MPH limit and the red flag, we wouldn't have
thousands of people dying on the roads every day like we do now.

If this scientist is right, about the debate over GM foods not being
"...much different from the debate that went on over the motorcar", then
perhaps in 90 years time there will be thousands of people dying every day
from the side-effects of genetically-modified foods?

Or was that just a bad example of apprehension?
