More than 80,000 workers supported a demonstration held in Melbourne
Australia on Thursday 12 August 1999 to protest against the Australian
government's proposed new industrial relation laws.
The new proposed laws would cut wages and conditions for workers, reduce
the ability of unions to represent workers, deny the rights of workers to
organise as unionists and declare most industrial action illegal.
The demonstration was the biggest in a series of meetings, demonstrations
and stopworks being organised by the Australian Council of Trade Unions,
the Victorian Trades Hall Council and industry unions.
The campaign against the anti-union laws is continuing.
