URGENT ACTION NEEDED NOW FOR EAST TIMOR

The latest situation in East Timor is very grave:

The following places have been attacked in Dili:

*Bishop Belo's House
*International Red Cross Centre
*the office of Yayasan Hak, an Indonesian human rights centre (that has
supported human rights in East Timor) about 100 people were murdered
 overnight
*several hundred people have been murdered
*severed heads have been placed on poles
*the Australian Consulate in Dili has been raked by machine gun fire
*the the car of the Australian Ambassador was fired upon by militias
*Indonesian police laughed at US aid workers who sought help when they
 were attacked by militias

The militias are being used by the Indonesian regime to carry out Plan B,
a programme of mass murder and mass evacuation

The genocide will not stop unless there is a serious commitment for an
international peace keeping force in East Timor.

EMERGENCY ACTION:
The Australian Coalition for a Free East Timor is recommending that all
Australians call as many of their state senators as possible to urge them
to take the following action:

It is important to demand that the Australian Government:

Call for a UN peace making mission to East Timor urgently
(It is illogical and dangerous to wait for Indonesia's permission)

Halt all military aid & cooperation with the Indonesian regime now
(Australia has military programs in Indonesia right now)

Cease the recognition of Indonesia's illegal occupation of East Timor
Officially thank East Timor for its assistance to Australia during World
War 2 (there has been no official thanks ever given)

ATTEND AN EMERGENCY RALLY:

4.30 PM TUESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1999
