FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN EAST TIMOR
The Indonesian dictatorship has finally released East Timor's courageous
leader, Xanana Gusmao. This is a great step forward in the slow move to
freedom for East Timor. At present he is the British Embassy in Jakarta.
His security will have to be extremely tight. The Indonesian military
specialises in "disappearing" released prisoners.
Meanwhile, the butchery continues in East Timor itself. The Australian
Government and the UN still insist that it needs Indonesia's permission to
send a peace keeping mission. Mr Downer and his departmental staff tell us
that to send such a mission is tantamount to declaring war against
Indonesia.
This is a nonsense for several reasons:
Indonesia's brutal occupation of East Timor violates international law
the occupation has never been ratified by the UN
NATO did not get Serbia's permission before it began bombing raids.
It is about as logical as expecting that the Allies to have sought
permission from Adolf Hitler before invading Poland in 1939 at the outset
of World War 2.
On 7 September, the Campaign staged a very successful rally outside South
Australia's Parliament House. About 700 people attended and expressed
strong support for a number of initiatives that they want the Australian
Government to take to halt the slaughter of East Timorese by Indonesia's
militias, army and police:
Make strong calls for a UN peace keeping force to go to East Timor
immediately.
Halt all military aid and cooperation with the Indonesian regime
Cease its recognition of Indonesia's illegal occupation
Officially thank East Timor for its assistance to Australia during World
War 2
Cease all aid and loans to the Indonesian government until it withdraws
its militias, army and "police" from East Timor
Rally participants included unionists, church organisations, Amnesty,
members of the East Timorese, Jewish and Irish communities. Catholic
Archbishop also attended. Prominent speakers included Fr John Heard
(recently returned from East Timor), Jacinta Azevedo & Helder da Costa
(East Timorese community), Rabbi Engel (Adelaide Hebrew Congregation), Dr
Michael Sullivan, Sandra Kanck MLC, Steph Key MP, Terry Roberts MLC, Chris
White (Secretary of the Trades & Labour Council) and Lisa Lines
(Resistance).
Music was provided by the Romero Group. The Campaign and the East Timorese
community are grateful for the strong support shown by the people of
Adelaide for the people of East Timor.
