Indonesian military links in Australia As Australians call for economic pressure on the Jakarta regime to withdraw support for the slaughter of East Timorese villagers intensifies new evidence has come to light of Australian corporate support for the Indonesian military. Investigation of Australian business links with the Indonesian military has revealed the involvement of Transfield Holdings, the construction firm for the controversial Melbourne Citylink freeway in outfitting the Indonesian Army. Transfield Holding, a Sydney based firm operated by the wealthy business tycoon Bruno Belgiorno-Nettis has been implicated in the supply of military hardware to the Indonesian military according to Internet sources. Transfield Holdings which also has operations in Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand participated in the construction of the tropical warfare facility in Indonesia. In addition the Transfield Corporation, a private corporation which had a annual turnover this year of $A1.4 billion according to Business Review Weekly has been involved in major business transactions in Indonesia and in development of a major Indonesian gold mine in Sulawesi which has received criticism by Indonesian environmentalists because of its impact on local people. Opponents to Jakarta's occupation of East Timor called for a further investigation of Australian corporate activity in Indonesia and for a suspension of trade links until East Timorese sovereignty is recognised. They called on all Australian people concerned for the safety of East Timorese islanders and for democracy in Indonesia to continue their boycott Indonesian goods.
