Indonesian military links in Australia

As Australians call for economic pressure on the Jakarta regime to withdraw support
for
the slaughter of East Timorese villagers intensifies new evidence has come to light of
Australian corporate support for the Indonesian military.

Investigation of Australian business links with the Indonesian military has revealed
the
involvement of Transfield Holdings, the construction firm for the controversial
Melbourne Citylink freeway in outfitting the Indonesian Army. Transfield Holding, a
Sydney based firm operated by the wealthy business tycoon Bruno Belgiorno-Nettis has
been implicated in the supply of military hardware to the Indonesian military
according
to Internet sources.

Transfield Holdings which also has operations in Malaysia, Vietnam
and Thailand participated in the construction of the tropical warfare facility in
Indonesia.
In addition the Transfield Corporation, a private corporation which had a
annual turnover this year of $A1.4 billion according to Business Review Weekly has
been
involved in major business transactions in Indonesia and in development of a major
Indonesian gold mine in Sulawesi which has received criticism by Indonesian
environmentalists because of its impact on local people.

Opponents to Jakarta's occupation of East Timor called for a further investigation of
Australian corporate activity in Indonesia and for a suspension of trade links until
East
Timorese sovereignty is recognised. They called on all Australian people concerned for
the safety of East Timorese islanders and for democracy in Indonesia to continue their
boycott Indonesian goods.
