No success as yet for NSW tenants to find any protection through legal
reform to the Residential tenancies Act. Although the Greens put up a bill
drafted by Rentwatchers designed to protect tenants from rent hikes caused
by the Olympics, which gained support from some other left leaning cross
benchers, the bill will not be supported by the ALP (what a surprise...).
If you are interested in this have a look at the NSW Legislative Council
Hansard for 15/9/99 pages 3-19 (search for the NSW Parliament website); or
have a squiz at the attached document which is an unformatted excerpt of the
debate.
The ALP has shown itself completely unwilling to accept the reality of the
impact that the Games will have on working class residents of NSW.
Rentwatchers had a demonstration at Darling Harbour the other day during
the '1 year to go to the Olympics' "celebration" and will continue to
organise protests aimed at raising the awareness of tenants and the
homeless. Their Olympic dream is our housing nightmare.
