Dear Comrades, The vote for the Militant Socialist Organisation's Stephen Jolly in the seat of Richmond yesterday was 12.25% (3,463 first preferences) with about 75% of the vote counted. We expect another 1,000 votes or more by the time the vote is completed. In some of the fourteen polling booths, Jolly received over 15% of the vote. The lowest votes were in the Richmond high rise flats with large Vietnamese communities. But even here the vote at one polling booth was over 9%. This is the highest vote for a socialist in years. We believe it is a product of six years of hard work in Melbourne, in particular in the constituency, since this branch was first established. The Melbourne branch of the MSO would like to thank all the comrades and supporters who put in long hours during our election campaign. In particular we would like to thank the Sydney MSO branch for its $1,000 donation, the $1,500 raised from trades unions and trade unionists, and the other donations from ordinary working people and youth. 23,000 leaflets were distributed, 500 posters went up, and 30,000 how to vote cards handed out. We had 45 people helping on election day. Other left parties also stood. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) stood Susan Duffy for the seat of Northcote. She won 7.7% (2,141 first preferences) with about 75% of the vote counted. We congratulate Susan for her good result. In the seat of Geelong the PLP's Luke Grose has won 2.2% of the vote (568 first preferences) with 25,802 votes counted so far. The Democratic Socialist Party's Jorge Jorquera received 1,541 first preferences or 5.4% of the vote for the seat of Melbourne, with 28,177 votes counted so far.
