MEDIA STATEMENT:
STOP THE MURDER OF EAST TIMOR'S FUTURE LEADERS

The Campaign's Information Officer, Andrew Alcock, released the following
statement regarding the latest situation in East Timor today:

"East Timorese independence is still in jeopardy, despite the welcome
presence of the Australian led UN peacekeeping force. The courageous East
Timorese who braved overwhelming odds to campaign for and to vote for
independence are now being pursued by the Indonesian military and its
militias throughout Indonesia.

The regime is intent on eliminating them. Journalists working in the region
report on seeing militias with lists of names and details of those that the
military has targeted. It is very dangerous for East Timorese who are
presently in Indonesia.

Without international intervention, the nation of East Timor could face the
tragic prospect of being deprived of many of the next generation of
youthful leaders because of the vengeful and murderous activities of the
Indonesian regime.

Supporters of independence and peace in East Timor are grateful for the
international efforts to create security, but call on the international
community to redouble their efforts to protect almost a quarter of East
Timor's population that is currently in Indonesia. If more pressure is not
brought to bear on the Indonesian dictatorship, the genocide of the East
Timorese will continue.

Following the audacious murder and mutilation of Dutch journalist, Sander
Thoenes, it is abundantly clear that the regime is still prepared to deal
ruthlessly and barbarically with those who would stand in its way. This
behaviour cannot be tolerated any longer.

We call on Australian, world and UN leaders to take the following urgent
actions to prevent any further bloodshed in East Timor and the region:

URGENT ACTIONS
1. An immediate UN supervised repatriation of all East Timorese refugees
from West Timor and other parts of Indonesia

2. An urgent increase in the emergency drops of food and other humanitarian
supplies to refugees in remote areas of East Timor to prevent starvation

3. The immediate withdrawal of all Indonesian troops and their militias

4. The maintenance of the ban on all forms of military cooperation with
Indonesia

5. The establishment of an international war crimes tribunal to investigate
members of the Indonesian dictatorship suspected of committing genocide and
gross human rights violations in East Timor, West Papua and Indonesia

6. The establishment of a UN special committee to determine the appropriate
levels of compensation and reparations that need to be made by Indonesia
and other governments that have profited from the death suffering and grief
in East Timor

7. Australia to immediately cease its de jure recognition of Indonesia's
occupation of East Timor, to thank the East Timorese people for their great
sacrifice and support during World War 2 and to make an official apology
for the 25 years of betrayal

8. The Australian Government to make a commitment to assisting
reconstruction in East Timor

9. The Australian Government to provide sanctuary to East Timorese refugees
who are being targeted by the Indonesian military and militias

10. Urging all governments, the World Bank and the IMF to strengthen their
sanctions against the Indonesian regime until it ceases its crime of
genocide in the region

11. Urge all responsible international citizens to boycott Indonesian
products and services

In addition, people are asked to give generously to those organisations
that are getting urgently needed humanitarian aid to the East Timorese and
support events that are raising money for this purpose".
