WEL Victoria is pleased to announce the inaugural
VIDA GOLDSTEIN AWARDS
...for women who matter!
Miss Goldstein was perhaps Victoria's most passionate and determined
feminist, "fighting for a foothold in Australian political institutions",
including Parliament itself, education, health care (she was one of the
Founders of the Queen Victoria Hospital for Women and Children), publishing
etc.
She was a "feminist with beliefs and principles which, though formulated
and articulated in the first decade of the 20th century, have much to offer
the modern women's movement".
"A chance to recognise and celebrate the positive impact women have on
Victorian life"
WEL aims to publicly enhance the status of women in Victoria, in the week
when women internationally are recognised for their valuable contribution
to all aspects of life.
On the evening of Thursday, March 9, 2000, women from varied and diverse
backgrounds will join together to recognise the achievements of Victorian
women through the nomination and awarding of several awards in various
categories of achievement.
The underpinning criteria for nomination to a category will be that the
nominee has, through their own actions, or those of the group they
represent, positively enhanced the position, or perception of women in
Victoria.
Categories of nomination include Women in Public Life, Women in the
Community and Women in the Public Eye, with several sub-categories within
each other three main categories. (Suggestions for sub-categories can be
sent to the Awards Organising Collective at the WEL Office).
This gala event will take the form of a cocktail party and awards ceremony,
to be held at Storey Hall, at RMIT in Melbourne City. To recognise the
varying capacities of women to pay, the cost of tickets will be on a
sliding scale, and cash bar will operate during the awards ceremony.
Put the event in your diary now, and start thinking about worthwhile women,
who you believe deserve to be congratulated for putting feminism into
practice, or policy, or both!
Further information about the evening, including nomination forms and
tickets sales, will be available on the Net, in WEL publications and
women's and industry newsletters and magazines by the end of January, 2000.
