****If anyone has an account with these banks they may wish to reconsider their patronage...Trudy ABC News http://www.abc.net.au/news/newslink/daily/ Tue, 1 Feb 2000 12:10 AEDT Australians spend big on political donations Unions, banks, tobacco companies and property developers remain some of the biggest donors to political parties last financial year. Figures from the Electoral Commission show Australians from all walks of life contributed to a political cause. A range of companies, from banks and cinema chains to retailers, media organisations, even Tattersalls, regularly donate to both sides of politics. But as expected, private companies mostly give more to the Coalition parties than to the ALP. Westpac gave $100,000 to the Liberal Party and $80,000 to the ALP, the ANZ donated $90,000 to the Coalition Parties and $30,000 to the ALP. The National and Westpac banks also donated to Pauline Hanson's One Nation party. Coles gave $65,000 to the Liberal Party and $41,000 to Labor. The ALP continues to get the vast bulk of its funding from unions, but a wide cross-section of Australian companies and individuals have contributed to its political coffers. 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation ************************************************************************* This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use." -- Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.alexia.net.au/~www/mhutton/index.html Sponsored by Melbourne's New International Bookshop Subscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=subscribe%20leftlink Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20leftlink
